We have just taken on a new client at My SEO Guy, and we have been a little shocked in the results we have found for their website and it’s current search engine rankings.
Shocked.. because they have employed a professional well known, and heavily advertised SEO company to ‘promote’ their site. This company was charging them on per month basis, which the client had been paying, yet when we reviewed the site, we found fundamental errors, and fundamental elements missing for the sites pages.
Of the 13 primary keywords we tested, we found only one page ranking in the first ten pages of Google for our client’s website. One … and it was on Page 10.
While the client works in a very competitive market, we were surprised at this very poor result for a website that was currently being “promoted”.
So what is missing…
Well.. just about everything :(
Page Titles, page descriptions, primary keywords, secondary keywords.. etc. etc.
Also…. text is repeated across every page of the site, and the same text forms large chunks of the text content of certain pages. This is very poor search engine optimisation, and may well have been the cause of the sharp fall in organic traffic to the site.
(We’ve hidden the numbers to protect the client and the previous SEO guys.)
So where do we start?
First job is to do some of the basics that we mentioned are missing above. Page titles etc. These are fundamental elements that need to be in place before any real SEO can start.
Looking at the steep drop in organic traffic that the site suffered a little over a month ago, we are going to be looking for some negative elements as well. Duplicate text on the site is one that stands out as a must-be-addressed problem. Other elements that we will investigate include off-site elements. Duplicate sites, pages, content. Links from ‘bad neighbourhoods’, links from “Articles”, and any other off-site element that could be affecting the site’s standing.
We have a lot to do, and a lot of ground to make up for this client. he has been shelling out his hard earned dollars for SEO for the last x months, and he really has nothing to show for the investment. In fact there is a possibility that the previous search engine optimisation guys have done some damage not only to his sit, but possibly his reputation.
